The wife had a very bizarre experience here in Hatfield on the weekend, where it started to roam (she's on Three) and the phone warned her by saying she could incur hefty data fees! The phone clearly had the 'R' symbol on.
Now obviously Three has a roaming agreement with Orange already, but I've never seen it showing as roaming - as I've assumed it accepts you on the network in a slightly different way. How the hell did this happen? Given T-Mobile's HQ is a 2 minute walk from our house, I wonder if they are testing the roaming - and perhaps her phone was using a T-Mobile base station which is testing roaming, so it was roaming in a different way.
I'd love to know the reason!
I'd also like to know why the other day, my BlackBerry (T-Mobile) got a signal for a short time in the underground tunnel between Essex Road and Old Street. I know it got a signal for long enough because I received an email which is time stamped to prove it was within the tunnel.
I know there could be a ventilation shaft somewhere, but it seems unlikely that you'd get a strong enough, stable, signal for long enough to get an email!
Today, my Orange phone had a 3G signal on the platform at Old Street (First Capital Connect) so that's got me wondering if there's a leaky feeder system being put in at the same time as they install a new PA system.
Intriguing....
