Embarrassing read - "you're more closed than we are" is absolute bullsh1t.
So Apple are rattled and feel it necessary to justify their stance on Flash in an effort to prove they are right and the customer is wrong (and doesn't need it). Whatever. It's like the government trying to sell the idea of an ID card scheme to the British public! Sure there's some truth in what he says, but Flash Player 10.1 on mobile devices will resolve several of the issues he's complaining about (battery life time, hardware acceleration, touch), and then Jobs' intransigence will look even more idiotic. It's obvious Flash is locked out so that Apple can maintain total control. Offering HTML5 and other "open" (but less capable) standards is all well and good, but these alternatives are not competing with Flash today or anytime soon. And if he's such a champion of open standards, why the heck is he backing and promoting the patent-encumbered H.264? I wonder why he felt it necessary to write this? |

I'll tell you why! Flash on Android will be out before the next iPhone is out and people will be able to judge for themselves whether Flash on mobile is so bad. From the Adobe videos that Jon posted, it looked pretty good to me although we don't know how battery life and stability will be for sure. But my guess is that it will work out well and Apple will just look silly for ignoring it. So Jobs wants his defence in first.

I do miss Flash on my Bold and look forward to seemless integration of it with my browser in future, just like I have on my PC. I don't see why I should download a separate app. just for youtube or mess around with HTML5. Try again St. Steve.

I do get the impression he's blaming Flash for the limitations of the iPhone/iPad and the iron grip Apple want to keep on their customers choices and options. |

You don't have to mess around with HTML5 - that's taken care of at the content creator end. Steve doesn't need to try again, he's got the largest installed base of proper mobile web devices already. The only thing he needs to worry about is Android but that has its own problems upcoming - although the whole Google vs World debate could/should sit in a separate thread. Quote:
Apple has the biggest share of apps at the moment and people still prioritise iPhone OS over any other when developing apps. The only realistic threat at the moment is Google Android which may well even surpass Apple in terms of number of devices shipped. Everyone else - MeeGo, Symbian, Bada, Web OS, RIM - is to a greater or lesser extent currently an also ran. If this turns out to be the case, and I admit it's an if, what is the advantage of developing in Flash over native Android? Yes a lot of web-based video is in Flash but increasing numbers of key aggregators have moved to HTML5. Adobe has been sucking up to Google like crazy (I've attended some of the love-ins) in order get Google's commitment to Flash to save the day. Is that a safe bet for Adobe considering Google's priorities of an open web and also Google's penchant for adopting and dropping 'friends' when it suits them? The only real weakness I see in Apple's non-adoption of Flash (from Apple's business perspective) is Apple's move towards larger screen mobile devices and consumption of electronic printed media. Media companies love Adobe, it runs in their veins. A lot of them have been repurposing their content using Air. Air works well for dynamic content like mags, etc. SJ claims it's trivial to to migrate this his 'open' web standards, but for the media companies, really it isn't.
