Info/Tips Price increase - Cancel your Orange contract

Recycle your old phone
Orange have recently sent out text messages to some of their customers (I assume all will get them sooner or later) about their prices changes coming into effect on 1st September. While data usuage has changed to effectively 60p a day max up 25MB limit the min call charge has significantly increased. The out of bundle cost, whether it be for numbers that wouldnt be included anyway such 087.., or extra minutes once your allowance has been used, or for ansaphone calls, has gone from 5p min to 15p min per call.

However as these price increases are more than the PRI its is reason to terminate your contract.

From Orange terms and conditions effective 1 June 2007

"Terminating your Contract because Orange has changed its terms

4.3 You may also terminate your Contract if we vary its terms, resulting in an excessive increase in the Charges or changes that alter your rights under this Contract to your detriment. In such cases you would need to give us at least 14 days written notice prior to your Billing Date (and within one month of us telling you about the changes). However this option does not apply if:

4.3.1 we have increased the Charges by an amount equal to or less than the percentage increase in the All Items Index of Retail Prices published by the Central Statistical Office in the Monthly Digest of Statistics in any 12 month period;"

Taken from http://www1.orange.co.uk/mobileterms/#4
All T&Cs http://www1.orange.co.uk/mobileterms/

Orange have had to admit defeat on this and HAVE been cancelling customers contracts if they request. Some Customer service reps wont know what you're talking about, so if you do want to get out of your contract keep calling back until you get one who does. Some reps are also saying you will have to return your handset, but this isnt anywhere in the terms and conditions so they cant make you.

Hope this helps some of you who are tied in and dont want to be!!

Hi Katgrit,

I received the said text & link the other day as well, although i'm not looking to terminate my orange contract period, does this allow for an earlier upgrade? i.e. canceling my current plan & signing up for another 18 month deal + new phone?

Just curious as got 6 months left on current deal

No. Only for terminations. And not everyone will be eligible.

Who will or won't be eligible? I've heard the arguement that people who have never made calls outside their allowance are sometimes being refused (but then calling back at getting a different rep who does cancel for them) at surely if you've signed up for a contract which then changes to your detriment that could be in the future, you could never have made a 087xxx call before you got that text, but plan to in the future, and now that call will cost you more. So that cant be a legit reason people wouldn't be eligible. Obviously Simax you might be thinking of something different, i'm just thinking aloud.

Does this really work? Does it depend on which contract you're on?

I've been on the Dolphin 35 for about 6 months and downgraded last week to Dolphin 30. Can I still get out of my contract using this method?

It appears so......call and ask.

I took the 'thinking of leaving Orange' selection on their automated phone thingy....

The guy knew about it he didn't argue, he explained the changes and asked if i'd still like to terminate and i said yes so he terminated it.
