Perez wasn't brought in for immediate success though, he was a longer-term view with similar attributes to Button (easy on tyres being the big one!). He'll come good with the time McLaren will afford him. They clearly didn't go out to find a driver who could jump into any car, however inconsistent it may be and get points. There are plenty of other drivers out there that could have done that, but all have limited time left in their careers. McLaren are looking long-term.

If so, then why didn't they chose Paul Diresta?

Good on tyres, has done amazing things at Force India and proven to be a good guy (no issues within the team). He'd also accept being a no2 driver I'd imagine for the time being.

Perez just seems a little wild (take Sundays swerving)...

Bahrain next up and Webber with a penalty already for causing an avoidable collision, so it looks like he's out of contention already. A lot of conspiracy theories flying around that Redbull set Webber up with the low fuel load, some cynical people out there.
