I was a child of the 70s. The original films changed the face of sci fi films forever. Up till then it was reruns of Star Trek on TV or the old Flash Gordon (black and white) reruns. Space films on the cinema were almost unheard of. Yes there have been a lot better films out since then story wise and the first 3 films whilst lacking IMO the magic of the originals did give a good background to the whole saga.
